Why your niche is your superpower and how to decide on one that feels like YOU!

Are you a teacher or new coach in the first stages of building your coaching business, confused and overwhelmed about how the hell you’re going to stand out from the crowd?

Let me guess…

  • You don’t have a CLEAR IDEA of exactly WHO YOU HELP - which is effecting everything else in your business

  • You’re MESSAGING is a bit ‘all over the place’

  • You’ve got a major case of IMPOSTER SYNDROME, questioning your abilities and doubting if this is ever going to happen for you.

  • Your CONTENT ISN’T CONVERTING into clients, and you’re spinning your wheels trying to find out why

  • You're constantly hustling to find ANYONE who might be interested, instead of attracting those who truly need and value your services.

There’s so many coaches out there and they all seem like they’ve got it sorted.

What have you got to say that’s unique, different or really worth listening to?

What’s gonna make your dream clients want to work with YOU over all the other amazing coaches out there?

The answer is simple. YOUR NICHE: aka. 1 problem you solve for 1 group of people.

Yes, my friends, your NICHE is your superpower, and I’m here to help you figure out exactly how to choose one that feels 100% authentic and uniquely YOU.

Why Your Niche is Your SUPERPOWER

First things first... WHY should you even care about having a niche? Can't you just coach anyone and everyone? Well, let me tell you something—trying to please everyone is a surefire way to please NO ONE. 😱

When you've got a clear niche, you're not just another coach in an ocean of coaches. You're THE go-to expert in YOUR specific area. You’re able to stand out and get noticed by the people you most love working with! And trust me, your people are looking for specialists who understand their unique challenges and dreams.

The Power of Specificity

Think about it: if you needed brain surgery, who would you want conducting the operation: a general doctor or a brain surgeon? Exactly! When it comes to super important life changes (ie. what we as coaches help our clients with) people don’t want or pay for generalists. They want specialists. Because they trust and believe that they will give them a higher quality service.

People want someone who gets them, who speaks their language and who knows their pain points inside and out. When you hone in on a niche, you're able to:

1. Craft targeted marketing messages that resonate deeply with your audience.

2. Create tailored solutions that actually solve real problems.

3. Build trust faster because you're seen as the go-to expert in that particular field.

4. Stand out from the crowd as you will become known for a specific thing, which is way more memorable than the general thing that everyone else is doing!

How to Decide on a Niche That Feels Like YOU!

Alright, now that we know why having a niche is SO damn important, let's talk about how to choose one that's authentically YOU.

Reflect on Your Passion and Experience

Start by asking yourself: What lights you up? What topics can you talk about endlessly without getting bored? Think back to your teaching days—what subjects or student issues were you most passionate about? Maybe it's helping students with learning disabilities or perhaps it's guiding young adults through career choices.

Your passion + experience = GOLDMINE 💰

Identify Common Problems You Can Solve

Next up, think about the common problems you've encountered either as an educator or in your life generally. Have parents often sought your advice on dealing with teenage angst? Do teachers frequently ask for your tips on classroom management?

Write these down because where there's a problem... there's an opportunity for YOU!

Research Your Market

Okay, so you've got some ideas buzzing around now. Time to do some detective work! 🕵️‍♂️ Check out forums, social media groups, and online communities where your potential clients hang out. What are they talking about? What are their biggest struggles?

This research will help validate if there's actually demand for the niche you're considering.

Get Feedback from Peers

Sometimes we're too close to our own strengths to see them clearly. Reach out to trusted colleagues or friends and ask them what they think your superpowers are. They might point out something amazing that you'd never even considered!

Test the Waters

You don't have to commit right away! It’s totally normal for your niche to change and evolve as you find your feet, learn what you love, and discover who you most love working with. Try offering free workshops or mini-coaching sessions within the niches you're interested in. See which ones resonate most with both YOU and YOUR AUDIENCE.

A little story from my own journey...

In the beginning, I was SO RESISTANT to having a niche... and even more resistant to creating a signature offer! 😤 I wanted to work with everyone; I didn’t want to be put in a box. I wanted to apply the ‘pure coaching’ method (which involves letting the client decide on the structure rather than offering any pre-prescribed guide), and I REALLY DIDN’T want to talk about my own experiences as a teacher (because I was sick of teaching and a bit traumatised from it all). 😫

But my coach was insistent that I niche, and I trusted her judgement, so I gave it a go. I became a ‘career coach for burnt-out professional women’. When I got my first 3 clients, it was like the universe was trying to tell me something... they were ALL teachers!! Clearly, I had a type. 😅

I found some success as a career coach, but I knew that if I wanted to be super successful in this industry, I'd have to do some upskilling. A lot of potential clients on discovery calls wanted a career coach who could also help them with CV writing and job applications… and honestly, this just wasn’t my bag. Which meant I lost out on business.

What I realised was that I was WAY more excited about helping people start businesses than helping them apply for jobs. So it felt like a natural progression to pivot my niche into business coaching. And I decided to listen to the universe and work with teachers as clearly these were my people. 🌟

So over the course of 2 years, I went from a general life coach who helps anyone with anything to a life and career coach for burnt-out women to a business coach for teachers who want to build coaching businesses. You can see the evolution, right? 🚀

Since I made the pivot, I have been invited to guest speak at events across the country, to be interviewed on podcasts by people I truly admire, as well as had my most successful quarter EVER in my business. Not to mention, I’ve built an incredible community of teacher-turned-coaches who all support and inspire one-another. It just feels so right and everything is ‘in flow’.
